Dr. Joseph Harrison Jackson (1900-1990) was the longest serving President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. At a time when Martin Luther King and other civil rights activists were actively engaged in civil disobedience, Jackson's conservative stance called for civil rights "through law and order." This fundamental difference resulted in a turbulent split within the National Baptist Convention, with King's supporters resigning from the National Baptist Convention in 1961 to form their own denomination, the Progressive National Baptist Convention. The PNBC thereby became the denomination for frontline supporters of King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference, while the NBC retained its controversial leader Jackson for decades to come.
